Healthy Kids Check
Did you know there is a special health check just for 4 year olds available through your General Practice?
The Healthy Kids Check is a positive health assessment of pre-school children in Australia. The purpose of the Healthy Kids Check is to ensure that every four year old child has a basic health check to see if they are healthy, fit and ready to learn when they start school. General Practices offer this basic health assessment for 4 year olds during or following their 4 year old immunisations.
The Healthy Kids Check covers height, weight, eyesight, allergies, hearing, oral health, and toileting. Other matters concerning a child’s general wellbeing and development can be discussed during this health check. These are all discussed with the parent/guardian during the consultation. The Healthy Kids Check promotes the early detection of lifestyle risk factors, delayed development and illness, and introduces guidance for healthy lifestyles and early intervention strategies.
The Check provides an opportunity to issue parents/guardians with information and advice on healthy habits for life for children as well as linking parents/guardians and children to the primary health care system. This Check also assists General Practitioners and Practice Nurses to identify any health issues for children prior to starting school and enables GPs to provide treatment or referral for any conditions identified as a result of the check.
Once a health check has been carried out the parents/guardians are given the Habits for Healthy Kids Guide which gives helpful information on the health and development of their child. Ask your GP for more information.
