Perth Central and East Medicare Local

Perth Primary Care Network (PPCN) has been announced as the successful agency for the implementation of Perth Central and East Medicare Local (PCEML) to commence operations from 1 July 2012.
PPCN would like to thank its key partners for their support in the development of what will be an innovative and locally responsive model to drive primary health care reform in the region.
The objectives of Medicare Locals include:
- Improving the patient journey through developing integrated and coordinated services.
- Providing support to clinicians and service providers to improve patient care.
- Identification of the health needs of local areas and development of locally focused and responsive services.
- Facilitation of the implementation and successful performance of primary health care initiatives and programs.
- Be efficient and accountable with strong governance and effective management.
A new company limited by guarantee (Perth Central and East Medicare Local Ltd) has been established and is ready for operation, and work will commence immediately on the transition process.
We will keep stakeholders and the community informed as the transition progresses, and we look forward to the shared journey of improving primary health care for the region.

Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Health Reform
The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) has agreed to a new deal on health to deliver national health reform built on a partnership between the Australian Government and the States and Territories.
The Australian Government will invest an extra $19.8 billion in public hospitals – matched by national standards to ensure that resources go directly to hospitals and benefit patients.
As part of the approach to the National Health Reform, the Australian Government has committed to a renewed focus on the delivery of stronger primary health care to get people the services they need in their local communities and keep people well and out of hospital.
Implementation of these reforms will include stronger clinical engagement to ensure that the voices of clinicians all over the country are heard in the process.
The announcement of Medicare Locals – Australia’s version of Primary Health Care Organisations – is an opportunity to put in place a regional infrastructure that, provided it is funded and empowered appropriately, will be fundamental to implementing service improvements and better health outcomes for the community.
Perth Primary Care Network (PPCN) has consequently embraced this direction and believes that General Practice Networks provide the best suited infrastructure on which to implement this new strategy.
PPCN will be releasing further information and developments as they occur.
