Our Region
The catchment area of Perth Primary Care Network has changed effective 1st July 2011 and spans approximately 2,419 square kilometres and includes the western suburbs, Perth metropolitan north-eastern and eastern area, and forms approximately 45% of the catchment of the North Metropolitan Area Health Service. The catchment area is extremely diverse and contains the following:
- the central business district;
- the inner western suburbs;
- medium to high density inner-urban residential settings;
- low density outer-urban / semi-rural settings;
- high levels of secondary and service industry; and,
- sector-specific primary industry (eg: agriculture, winemaking).
Population spread and characteristics are equally diverse, with marked population and housing / social infrastructure growth in the north-eastern corridor already started (and accelerating), and the potential for major growth in the eastern / foothills corridor as new housing estates and satellite communities are developed.
Satellite developments such as Ellenbrook have seen major influxes of residents with more development already in progress at Ellenbrook, High Wycombe, Midland (through the Midland Redevelopment Authority), Forrestfield, and the Upper Swan Corridor.
In population terms, latest estimates from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (Estimated Resident Population 2009) indicate a total of 440,873 residents within the PPCN catchment area which equates to 26.5% of all persons in metropolitan Perth. Of this population, approximately 12% of people within the catchment area are aged 65 and over, 33% are aged under 25 years, 17.1% are unemployed and 2% are from indigenous backgrounds.
